What do I need before I start using Enhance Preview XT 2.1.3, 2.1.4 or Enhance Preview XT SE?
For EPXT 2.1.3: a.) Power Macintosh running Mac OS 7.6.1 (or later)
b.) QuarkXPress 3.32 (PPC Native only)
c.) A minimum of 12 MB of RAM allocated to QuarkXPress
Note: You will need to allocate more RAM if you are running other third-party XTensions (at least 3MB).
For EPXT-SE:
a.) 68K or Power Macintosh running Mac OS 7.6.1 (or later), or an i486 processor, Celeron, or Pentium 90MHz (or higher) processor or compatible computer running Windows 95 (or later)
b.) QuarkXPress 4.04 (or later)
c.) A minimum of 12 MB of RAM allocated to QuarkXPress (Mac only)
For EPXT 2.1.4 Mac:
a.) 68K or Power Macintosh running Mac OS 8.1 (or later) b.) QuarkXPress 4.04, 4.10, or 4.11 (PPC or 68K)
c.) A minimum of 12 MB RAM allocated to QuarkXPress
For EPXT 2.1.4 Win:
a.) i486 processor, Celeron, or Pentium 90MHz (or higher) processor or compatible computer with a minimum of 24MB of RAM
b.) Windows 95 (or later)
c.) QuarkXPress 4.04, 4.10, or 4.11
d.) QuickTime 3.0, or later (recommended)
* Note: Please make sure that you have installed the "Full Install" version (free from the Apple.com Web site), as this version contains the necessary JPEG compression/decompression system extension used by EPXT to generate optimal quality cache files.
I try to enter my 2.1.3 or 2.1.4 serial number but I get an dialog box stating that it is invalid.
The EPXT 2.1.3 and 2.1.4 serial numbers are located on the back of the QuickStart Reference Guide located inside the CD jewel case. It is NOT the number that is located on the back of the CD case.
The prefix for EPXT 2.1.3 is "kga-ep2134ie-"
A common error occurs when entering the prefix for EPXT 2.1.4:
"kga-ep21i4m-", for Macintosh
"kga-ep21i4w-", for Windows
The bold/red characters are respectively, the number one and the letter i.
These serial numbers are not case sensitive.
The respective serial numbers will not work if you use the incorrect installer. While both the 2.1.3 and 2.1.4 installers are located on the CD, be sure that you use the installer that corresponds with included serial number. This means, a 2.1.3 serial number will not work to unlock and activate EPXT 2.1.4. You will need to purchase an upgrade from KGA to activate EPXT 2.1.4.
When enhancing my images, the progress bar only goes halfway and an "I/O error trying to read or write to disk [-36]" error message is displayed. What does this mean?
This is likely to occur if you are using the "Minimal Install" of Apple's QuickTime software. Please download and install the (free) "Full Install" of Quicktime 4.x (or later).
What is the difference between EPXT - Special Edition, v2.1.3 and v2.1.4?
Enhance Preview XT - Special Edition, available from Quark, Inc.'s Web site and bundled with QuarkXPress 4.1 is a freeware XTension that introduces you to the capabilities of Enhance Preview XT - The Full Version. EPXT-SE is a 4.x-native XTension, and therefore fully optimized for performance and compatibility, which enables you to enhance and preview one image at-a-time. The full version lets you see your entire document while using the enhanced previews, so you can softproof your designs with improved color accuracy, prior to output. In addition, the full version lets you crop and align your images accurately, place graphics and text over other images with precision, and better communicate your designs to others without needing to print them.
The full version also manages the automatic deletion of cache files for you. Where EPXT-SE requires you to perform a some housekeeping to remove these files, the full version simplifies this process by storing these files in a set folder and deleting them whenever you exceed a specified limit. Alternatively, you can delete these files manually, at any time.

My copy of QuarkXPress for Macintosh tells me it's running in Demo Mode. What does this mean?
After the evaluation period for EPXT 2.1.3 and PPXT 2.0.2 has expired, QuarkXPress 3.32 will run in "Demo Mode." At this time you should remove EPXT/PPXT from your XTension folder. If you wish to continue testing EPXT/PPXT you may place it back into the XTension folder, but it CANNOT be used in any further production, as any printed pages will have the word "Demo" printed across it. Also, any documents saved in QuarkXPress Demo Mode CANNOT be opened by any other version of QuarkXPress.
Note: This applies to ALL 3.32 evaluation / demonstration XTensions.
You should not run EPXT 2.1.3 with QuarkXPress 4. This version of QuarkXPress requires EPXT 2.1.4. EPXT 2.1.4 will not cause XPress to run in demo mode, it will simply expire when the evaluation period is up.
How do I know if my Macintosh version of QuarkXPress is PPC native?
With QuarkXPress 3.32, you need to select the Apple menu and choose "About QuarkXPress." If the splash screen that appears says "Power Macintosh" and has a flashing lightning bolt, and a bumpy metal background, then your version of QuarkXPress is PPC native. If the splash screen is orange and blue then it is not PPC native.
With QuarkXPress 4.x, you need to select the Apple menu and choose "About QuarkXPress" while holding down the Option key. The resulting window will display information about your QuarkXPress Environment, and the 4th item down will state whether your version is "Power Mac Native: Yes or No."
I'm experiencing very slow screen redraw, while zooming or scrolling in QuarkXPress, when displaying enhanced previews. Is there anything that I can do about this?
This is a common problem that occurs with the Macintosh version of EPXT and EPXT-SE when there's insufficient memory allocated to QuarkXPress. You can fix this by increasing the amount of RAM by at least 3MB (using the Get Info dialog). More RAM may needed if you are running a lot of third party XTensions. If you are using EPXT 2.1.4, we also recommend that you update your software to 2.1.4 revision 6, as the display performance of this revision is up to 20 times faster than previous versions. This enables you to leave the display of your enhanced previews on all the time.
Note: You can also turn the enhanced preview display off, temporarily, if needed. Click here for more information on how to do this.
I only have access to the Internet via a PC but I use a Mac for QuarkXPress, how do I download the Mac version?
Download the file to your PC and save it as a binary file. Check the preferences for your particular browser for this option. Once downloaded you should be able to transfer the file to your Mac as you normally would.
While using EPXT 2.1.3 with QuarkXPress 3.32 (Mac only), I try to import vector based EPS files from either Freehand or Illustrator and I get an End of File error and a type -39 error.
We are currently evaluating adding this capability to a future release of the XTension. Please stay tuned...
While using EPXT 2.1.3 with QuarkXPress 3.32 (Mac only), I sometimes experience problems when I import an EPS from Photoshop. What can I do?
If you either crash, lock up, or get a type 11 error, you need to download the EPXT 2.1.3r3 update. This fixes this problem (which was related to importing EPS files that include a JPEG preview or compressed separations).
Note: Precision Preview XT does not support this type of EPS file.
In QuarkXPress 4.1x (Mac only), I sometimes get a "Can't find required volume or folder [-35]" error when trying to save my document. Why is this?
Changes made in the QuarkXPress 4.1x update introduced this error. We have posted an update which fixes this and the File not Found [-43] error (see below) on the KGA Web site. Please go to the Download > Updaters Web page for the 2.1.4 revision 6 update, or click here.
If problems persist when saving your document, after updating to EPXT 2.1.4r6, it's possible that the error is not EPXT-related and that the document has been corrupted in some fashion. You can try the following workarounds to save your document:
* Choose File > Open, select the currently open document and click the Open button, then choose File > Save.
* Switch from QuarkXPress to the Finder (without quitting) and double-click on the original document icon, then choose File > Save.
* Perform a "Thumbnail Drag," using the following steps:
1) Open a new document (File > New) that's the same size as the document you can't save.
2) Choose View > Thumbnails for both documents.
3) Choose View > Windows > Tile Documents to display both documents side-by-side.
4) Select all pages in the problem document (i.e., the source document). To select all pages, click on page 1, and then Shift-click on the last page.
5) Click on any of the selected pages in the source document, hold down the mouse button, and then drag the pages into the new (target) document.
6) While still holding down the mouse button, position the pointer above or below page 1 in the target document, and then release the mouse button. The selected pages are copied to the target document.
7) Delete the extra page (the first page or the last page, depending on where you placed the copied pages) in the target document.
8) Click on the target document window, and then choose File > Save or File > Save As to save the new document.

When I use EPXT 2.1.4 (Mac) with QuarkXPress 4.1, or later, I sometimes get a "File not found [-43]" error when updating pictures that are listed as Missing or Modified in the Usage dialog box and when saving a document. Why is this?
Changes made in the QuarkXPress 4.1 and 4.11 update introduced this error. We have posted an update which fixes this and the Can't find required volume or folder [-35] error (see above) on the KGA Web site. Please go to the Download > Updaters Web page for the 2.1.4 revision 6 update, or click here.

I am using the full version of EPXT. Since I updated to QuarkXPress 4.1 (or 4.11) I am experiencing conflicts during startup when this XTension is installed. What should I do?
The QuarkXPress 4.1 updater automatically installs EPXT-Special Edition, a "lite" version of EPXT that offers a reduced feature set of the full product. In most configurations, when you launch QuarkXPress, the full version of EPXT will take precedence over EPXT-SE. However, in some configurations a conflict can occur. To avoid problems, we recommend that you either move EPXT-SE into a different folder or throw it away.
I sometimes get an "Unknown Error [-35]" error when I choose the Revert to Saved option (File menu). Is there any way to fix this problem? (Mac only) This is a known problem with EPXT 2.1.4 that was addressed in EPXT 2.1.4 rev 4. Please download the latest EPXT 2.1.4 update, available on this site. To do this, click on the Download button at the top of the home page and then check the option to download the EPXT 2.1.4 rev 6 Update, or click here.
How can I find and delete enhanced preview cache files when I no longer need them?
The controls in the Preview Cache area of the Default Enhance Preview XT Preferences dialog box (Edit -> Preferences -> Enhance Preview XT) let you manage the enhanced preview cache files generated by EPXT.
You have several options for deleting cache files when you no longer need them:
1) You can delete all cache files in your designated cache folder at any time by clicking the Clear Cache Files button.
2) EPXT will automatically delete cache files in the designated cache folder when the combined size of the files in the folder exceeds the specified Cache Limit. The first time you open the Default Enhance Preview XT Preferences dialog box after launching QuarkXPress, EPXT compares the combined size of the files in the cache folder to the specified Cache Limit. If the cache limit has been exceeded, EPXT will automatically delete cache files (starting with the oldest files) when you click OK to close the dialog box until the combined size of the remaining files is less than the specified cache limit. EPXT will not automatically delete any cache files created during the current QuarkXPress session (a session begins when you launch XPress and ends when you quit).
3) If you've chosen to store cache files in the same folder as the original image (or if you are using EPXT-Special Edition, or Precision Preview XT), you can use your computer's Find File feature to find files that contain either ".ivc", ".ivu", or ".fpx" then delete the files you no longer need.
I dont always need such good looking previews. Is there a way to turn them off?
You can turn the display of the Enhanced Previews off temporarily, by clicking on the Hide Enhance Previews icon on the EPXT floating palette, or choose Hide Enhance Previews in the Enhance Preview submenu (View menu). The keyboard shortcut for this operation is Option+0 (keypad) if you're using a Macintosh computer, or Alt+0 (keypad) using Windows.
Alternatively, you might find allocating more RAM to XPress (Mac only) helps speed up such processes as zooming, scrolling, or panning, around your document at high zoom magnifications if you are displaying Enhanced Previews all of the time.
