What
do I need before I start using Precision Preview XT 2.0?a.) Power Macintosh b.) QuarkXPress 3.32 that is PPC Native c.) A minimum of 12 MB of RAM allocated to QuarkXPress Note: You will need to allocate additional RAM (at least 3MB) if you are running other third-party XTensions. How do I know if my version of QuarkXPress 3.32 is PPC native? While running QuarkXPress select the Apple menu and choose"About QuarkXPress" if the splash screen that appears says "Power Macintosh" and has a flashing lightning bolt, and a bumpy metal background then your version of QuarkXPress is PPC native. If the splash screen is orange and blue then it is not PPC native. Will there be a PC-compatible version of PPXT?There are no plans at present to release a Windows version of PPXT. Please download the Windows version of Enhance Preview XT, we're sure this'll provide you with the kind of functionality you're looking for. I only have access to the internet via a PC but I use a Mac for QuarkXPress, how do I download this file?Download the file to your PC and save it as a binary file. Check the preferences for your particular browser for this option. Once downloaded you should be able to transfer the file to your Mac as you normally would. Why
are there files on my hard drive labeled with .ivu or .fpc?Precision Preview XT use IVUE and Flashpix file formats to enhance the preview that you see on screen. When you create an Enhanced Preview, a JPEG compressed IVUE file is generated and placed in the same folder as the original image. If the image is used more than once or in multiple documents, only one Enhanced Preview will be created and used for all occurrences. Keep these files available if they are used frequently. Enhanced Previews are typically much smaller than their original source image so they occupy very little disk space. Every
time I open a new QuarkXPress document I have to reset PPXT preferences,
is there a way to set these globally? If you set the preferences while no documents are open you are setting preferences for every document created from that point on. If you set preferences with a document open preferences are set for just that particular document. I
try to import vector based EPS files from either Freehand or Illustrator
and I get an End of File error and a type -39 error. At this time we do not support vector-based art work, or EPS files that contain PostScript data. Sometimes
when I import an EPS from Photoshop I crash or lock up or even get a type
11 error. What can I do?Make sure that the EPS is not a JPEG compressed EPS. Precision Preview XT does not support that type of EPS. PPXT
continues to cache and re-cache my images and then moves my images from
box to box, for example image 1 in box 1 gets moved to box 2. How can I
stop this?Images named the same will confuse PPXT and cause the same preview to be used for each picture box. For example images named picture.tiff and picture.eps are seen as the same image. To solve this simply add a "." to the end of your file and PPXT will add the proper extension and treat each file individually. So picture.tiff will change to picture.tiff.ivc and picture.eps will change to picture.eps.ivc. Since
the images on screen look like the original will they take longer to print? If you are using the Enhanced Preview workflow images will print at the same rate that your images would normally print at, however if you are using the IVUE or FlashPix workflow then the images should print faster because only the information that your printer needs is being sent. When
I print my images come out looking like a black and white negative. If your printer is not Postscript compatible then you should disable the "Print Separations" option in the PPXT preferences dialog box. What
happens when I do a collect for output? If you have decided to use the Enhanced Preview workflow then when collect for output is implemented only your original images will be sent to the collect folder. If you are using the IVUE or FlashPix file format then when a collect for output is performed the IVUE and FlashPix files will be sent to the collect folder and you will need to make sure that your service bureau has Precision Preview XT. How
do I use Precision Preview XT in an OPI workflow environment?Precision Preview should be used to only enhance the preview of the FPO image. This will allow the link to the high resolution file to be maintained. At this time we can not match the quality of the high resolution file because we are starting out with the low resolution FPO. When
I move a picture box QuarkXPress does not allow me to make an Undo.
What can I do to fix this? This problem occurs in QuarkXPress 3.32, but will not occur in QuarkXPress 4.x. It is due to the way XPress enables XTensions to function. Can I use a clipping path with Flashpix files? The current release of the Flashpix file format does not support clipping paths. To utilize clipping paths, you will need to use the IVUE file format. However, Flashpix images can contain an alpha channel. You will be able to take further advantage of working with these in QuarkXPress 4.x. Can
I change the amount of compression used in converting images to the FlashPix
or IVUE file formats? You can adjust the compression quality in the preferences to produce images of an ideal size, yet maintain image quality. Below 20% you may begin to see JPEG artifacts. When
using the view Separations on screen option my computer slows down. Is there
anything that I can do to speed this up?You may find that using this option slows down your screen refresh. If this is the case, you should not specify this as the default. If you wish to test how an image will look using different separation tables, it is quicker to preview the image in the Separation/USM dialog. This dialog also enables you to preview the image with or without color separation. How
can I see how the unsharp masking feature will work on my images? To test how an image will look using different USM settings, it is quicker to preview this in the Separation/USM dialog. This dialog also enables you to preview the image with and without unsharp masking. Does
PPXT allow me to use clipping paths with Tiff images?Although both TIFF and Photoshop images can contain a clipping path, these clipping paths are not supported in QuarkXPress 3.3x versions. Precision Preview XT enables you to use these clipping paths when converting to the IVUE file format and for Enhanced Previews of Photoshop images. I
dont always need such good looking previews, is there a way to turn
them off?Displaying Enhanced Previews all the time can occasionally slow down your performance in QuarkXPress. You might find allocating more RAM to XPress (Mac only) helps speed up such processes as scrolling, or panning, around your document at high zoom magnifications. Alternatively, you can turn the display of the Enhanced Previews off temporarily, from the Precision Preview submenu (View menu). When
I open a new document or try to enhance or convert an image, an alert is
displayed asking me to locate the Separation Tables folder or informing
me that an error has occurred while initializing the separation tables.
How can I fix this? When you install PPXT, a folder called Precision Separation Tables is created within your QuarkXPress program folder. PPXT uses the files in this folder when generating enhanced previews and coverting images to VUE or FlashPix format and for color separating these converted images or output. You can move this folder elsewhere on your hard disk, but you should not throw it away. If PPXT cannot locate the Precision Separation Tables folder, you will not be able to enhance or convert images (and an alert will be displayed). If you accidently throw away the folder, you can simply reinstall the Tables from the PPXT Installer CD or you can download a copy of the folder from KGA's Download Page (http://www.koyosha.com/xt/demo/). I
sometimes use a service bureau to print QuarkXPress documents that contain
enhanced or converted images. What do I have to do to make sure that my
service bureau can print these documents? If your QuarkXPress documents contain only enhanced previews, your service bureau can print them without PPXT. However, if your documents contain converted IVUE or FlashPix images, your service bureau will need PPXT to print them. Also, you should make sure to provide your service bureau with all imported picture files, including converted IVUE and FlashPix files. If you use QuarkXPress' Collect for Output command, converted IVUE and FlashPix files will automatically be copied to the selected folder. In
4.0 some enhanced bitmap images don't seem to be displayed at high resolution
when the background color of their picture boxes is set to None. Why is
this? This is caused by a new method of handling transparency (or None-colored backgrounds) introduced in QuarkXPress 4.0. It is not a problem in QX 3.32. The only way to accurately view the enhanced version of the bitmap file is to temporarily change the picture box background to a color. |
